I was born in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. That makes Spanish my first language; I earned my first Dental Degree in 1988 at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico, in Mexico City. I met my husband Michael a native Nevadan who loves hunting and came to USA in 1991. We have two children, Tony, college student at UNR and Selena, finishing eight grade. I got my second Dental Degree at the University of the Pacific A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, in 2003 and I have been working with children my whole career.
I am a member of the American Dental Association, Northern Nevada Dental Society, Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, International Association of comprehensive Aesthetics I keep my knowledge and skills up to date by attending Continuing Educating Courses every year.
While I was born in San Diego, my family moved to Reno when I was five so I consider Reno my home. I attended the University of Nevada, Reno for my undergraduate education and then moved to San Francisco to attend the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. In dental school, I quickly realized that treating children was my passion and I decided to specialize in pediatric dentistry. I completed my pediatric residency with Lutheran Medical Center at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, as the Chief Resident.
I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the University of the Pacific Alumni Pediatric Chapter. To ensure that my treatment methods are the most current, I attend continuing education courses at both the local and national levels.
While at Brigham Young University my wife and I started our family. By the time we graduated from Orthodontic residency we had 5 children: 3 boys and 2 girls. In our free time we love to swim, snow ski, and ride atv’s and dirt bikes. When I’m not doing those hobbies you’ll probably find me tickling the ivory keys on the piano or eating at my favorite restaurant– Port of Subs.
With orthodontic treatment we will have several appointments together and I want you to not only enjoy your new look and straight teeth, but also enjoy your visits to our office and develop a close friendship with me and my staff. My hope is that when you are finished with braces you can say, “I really loved my orthodontic experience at My Kid’s Smile!'”
I grew up just outside San Diego, CA and lived there until going to college at Brigham Young University. After college I attended dental school at the Ohio State University and discovered that working with the kids was exciting; it brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction. Following dental school I moved to Arizona and completed a two-year specialty program in pediatric dentistry.
As part of my continuing education, I am a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, and the Northern Nevada Dental Society.Additionally, I recently became a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. I also attend national and local classes to stay atop the ever changing field of dentistry.
“What a great practice! Being a mom of twin girls, taking them to any doctor isn’t the easiest task. Luckily from the moment I walked in the door I was able to breath a sigh of relief. The waiting room had a big TV that was playing a movie and there were three iPads for the kids to play with; my girls were instantly entertained. Staff was friendly and Dr.Wilde seemed excited to see us and made us feel welcomed. We did not feel rushed.”
Dr. Gookin and his staff are amazing! They keep my kids comfortable and relaxed during every procedure. They communicate everything that is being done, give options so the parents have some say in what will be done, clearly explain the post procedure care so you don’t go home unsure of what to do. Dr. Gookin makes follow up calls in the evenings to make sure his patients are doing ok. Dr. Gookin will definitely be my kids dentist for the rest of their childhood.
“My wife and I had an excellent experience when we brought in our twins. We were worried with the procedure that she had to have done, but they made us and our children feel extremely comfortable, and reassured us that everything is going to be okay. My experience could not have gone better. Thank you Dr. Teglia, and the reception staff as well, for creating a pleasurable experience.”
